I chose, Is Mexico Turning Back or Moving On? by Alan Riding from the New York Times. He starts his opinion piece by giving a little background on Mexico's flawed government. He states how the presidential election that just happened can go both ways and the new PRI president, Enrique Pena Nieto, can make a change or let Mexico go downhill with the drug war and murders going on. Riding also speaks of other parties such as PAN (National Action Party) and PRD (Party of Democratic Revolution) that are involved in the government and how they are also to blame for the corruption in Mexico.
The author's approach of asking rhetorical questions does a good job of catching reader's attention and makes you think whether the new president can help Mexico. He asks questions like "Has multiparty democracy failed? Does the country really want to turn back the clock? Or has the PRI changed, as it loudly claims?" And expresses his thoughts after he questions the readers which makes it easy to read and understand. He doesn't establish a clear opinion; he seems to be on edge whether Mexico will change or not. It seems he's leaning more towards doubting on Mexico's new president, especially towards the end when he says "But in truth I don’t think Mexico would now allow that to happen. A more likely scenario is that, if elected, Mr. Peña Nieto will try to please everyone and will disappoint many. And if he governs only for the PRI’s old pals, he can expect to hear from the Mexican street again." He does a good job of making the reader debate to themselves and research more about Mexico. I liked the article and felt that he had a lot of facts and knew what he was talking about it. Helped me with writing my opinion piece!!

Wow!!! Rita you did a very good job of explaining this article, I actually had to go in and read it for myself simply because I don't really get into politics (here) but especially in Mexico. I think you really captured exactly what the author was trying to say here. Great Job!!1
I think a have to agree with the author. It is going to take a lot for Mexico's corruption to stop. The fact that the new president belongs to the PRI won't make things any better. I really liked the way you explained the topic.
You did a good job on explaining the article and i agree with the author that alot has to be done to end the corruption in that country. However, the PRI has been taking charge for 70 years and i think that even with PAN or PRD as Mexico's president if Mexicans dont want a change, only so much can be done. I doubt Enrique Pena Nieto can do something about the drug cartels, much less stop crimes in mexico.
